When people think of WoW Cataclysm, scenes of the end of the world appear in their minds: Everything will be destroyed in a glowing maelstrom and the world will be formed anew in a second “Big Bang”. Yet it won’t quite go that way.
Blizzard is going for a soft transition. For now, only a few transitional events will be implemented. With the current WotLK patch, real Cataclysm elements will be added which change the game in a profound manner: We’re pretty much standing with one foot in the midst of the sequel!
Most conspicuous of all is the complete overhaul of the talent tree, downsizing highest grade talents to 31 points (41 useable points total). What appears to be clear-cutting at first – which won’t really sit well with many gamers – should actually offer more depth with less complexity.
All in all, it appears WoW is finally becoming more user-friendly and easier for beginners. Sure, it may be a bit unusual for the third sequel of a game that already has a loyal fan community. One thing to look forward to is the new launcher that allows you to download patches and game data while playing.
Further highlights: Reforging, Justice Points as a new PvE currency, new PvP Honor Points, revised talent points, skills, and spells, ranged weapons don’t need ammo anymore, altered item and class values, mastery rating, spells and skills scale with level (no more ranks), tank tree for Death Knight, cloth garbed characters don’t need to repair as much, and so on, and so on, and so on… oh, you’ll see soon enough!
